BIOGRAPHY

"Abraham Walkowitz (1878-1965) was born in Tyumen Russia. He moved to New York City in 1889 along with his family. He studied art at the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris. Walkowitz traveled extensively in Europe. He was a member of the People's Art Guild which, established in 1915, was the first artist cooperative in America.
During his lifetime Walkowitz exhibited widely. He was associated with Alfred Steiglitz's first gallery the Little Gallery of the Photo Secession; had solo exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum (1939), the Newark Museum (1941), the Jewish Museum (1949) and the Zabriskie Gallery (1959), and was included the 1913 Armory Show.
