BIOGRAPHY

Carrie Mae Weems was born in Portland, Oregon in 1953. She earned a B.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, in 1981, and an M.F.A. from the University of California, San Diego, in 1984. She also pursued graduate studies in Folklore at UC Berkeley, and in 1999 was presented with an honorary doctorate from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland. Weems has taught extensively in colleges and universities throughout the country. New work by Weems has been commissioned by numerous organizations, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Chicago Public Library, the 47th Venice Biennale, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.. Since the 1980s Weems's artwork has been included in solo and group exhibitions in Senegal, South Africa, England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Korea, Canada and the United States. In addition, her work is held in the collections of several major museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Carrie Mae Weems is represented by PPOW in New York. She currently lives and works in Syracuse, New York.
