BIOGRAPHY

James Chapin (07/09/1887-07/12/1975) was born in West Orange, New Jersey. From 1911 to 1912 Chapin studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp, Belgium, with Julian De Vriendt. After returning to the United States he lived in Greenwich Village. During this time he learned about Cubism and Cezanne. His His main interest was the portrayal of people.and his subject matter varied from farmers and farm life to workmen and urban life. Chapin received several awards including the Royal Academy First Prize & Medal for draftsmanship in 1911 and the Isaac N. Maynard Award for Portraiture in 1956. He also participated in many exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. In 1924 he moved to a log cabin on the farm of the Marvin family in northwestern New Jersey, whose bucolic setting became the dominant influence on his artistic career.
