BIOGRAPHY

John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) was born in Dunavant, Kansas. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1916, at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1916 until 1918, and Paris from 1926 until 1927. Curry spent much of his adult life in Wisconsin. He was a full member of the National Academy of Design.

"John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) studied art at various schools from 1916 to 1919. He studied in Paris from 1926 to 1927. During the 1930’s Curry worked as a muralist for the Works Progress Administration Federal Artist Project. He was a full member of the National Academy of Design and the
Art Students League.
Along with Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, Curry was known as a Regionalist or American Scene artist. His portraits and landscapes were inspired by the midwest, particularly Kansas. Curry's subject matter was often the daily lives of farmers and workers; his work included very little nostalgia.
Steuart Curry was born in Dunavant, Kansas. He studied at various institutions from 1916 to 1919, and in Paris from 1926 to 1927. During the 1930s Curry worked as a muralist for the Works Progress Administration/ Federal Artist Project.
