BIOGRAPHY

A prolific 20th century abstractionist; Ilya Bolotowsky was the protege pf the de Stijil master Piet Mondrian in his fomrative years; his work both exemplifies his Hegelian philosophy / highly geometric style (both intertwine in a searcg of metaphysical transcendence through the "purity" of abstraction). In modernist avant-garde style Bolotowsky was one of "The Ten Whitney Dissenters;" a now art historically canonical group composite of such figures as Mark Rothko and Adolf Gottlieb.

Bolotowsky (influentially) taught at Black Mountain College from 1946 to 1948.

Bolotowsky's first solo museum show was in 1974 at New York City's Guggenheim Museum and went on to the National Collection of Fine Arts.
