Newcomb College Pottery

American, (1895–1940)
BIOGRAPHY

The Newcomb Pottery was a business enterprise and artist collective established in 1895 for young women attending H. Sophie Newcomb College, at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was based on the model of the English Arts and Craft movement which believed in the importance of the dignity for artists hand-making everyday objects. Many women, like Anna Frances Simpson, returned to work at Newcomb after graduation. While men, like Jonathan B. Hunt, threw the pottery on the wheel and created its shape, it was the women who designed and decorated the exterior images on the pottery.
