BIOGRAPHY

"Rob Amberg (1947- ) is a photographer who is largely associated with Western North Carolina. In 1977 he participated in a solo exhibition at the Asheville Art Museum that focused on the social-historical culture of Sodom Laurel, North Carolina. Of the subject matter he stated, ""This is a photographic, in-depth look at a small, rural community. I've been going there for about two years, and I wanted to reflect its lifestyle, as well as my relationship to that lifestyle.""
His work is in the permanent collection of the Federal Reserve Bank, Charlotte, NC; Lehigh University Art Galleries; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Cullowhee, NC. His work has been exhibited at SECCA, Winston-Salem, NC; Greenhill Center for North Carolina Art, Greensboro, NC; University of Dayton, Dayton, OH, and Belk Gallery Western North Carolina University.
In 1989 he received a Project Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. In September of 1992 his photos were featured in an exhibition using the venue of the Spirit Square Gallery in Charlotte. Amberg's works and associated verbal statements have been published numerously in such publications as the ""Arts Journal"" and ""Southern Exposure."" More importantly he produced his own book on the subject of rural photography and went on to teach the subject at Mars Hill College."
