BIOGRAPHY

Virginia Derryberry (1950- ) was born in Morristown, Tennessee. Derryberry’s artwork is recognizable by her dream-like imagery. Using a landscape setting, Derryberry distorts space and shape. Therefore, her paintings have a quality of being familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. This effect is also accomplished by her manipulation of scale and format. Her vibrant palate makes each oil painting strikingly bold, and her use of objects, shadows, and reflections allows dimensionality. Derryberry has received numerous awards for her artwork, including an award from the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs for her paintings commissioned for a display in the E Concourse of Hartsfield International Airport. She has had solo and group exhibitions all over the south east, and has held visiting artist positions at the Penland School, NC, and Arrowmont School in Tennessee. Her work is included in the permanent collections of several public and private institutions including the Carnegie Museum of Art, NationsBank, the CGR Corporate Collection, and the Asheville Art Museum. Derryberry currently lives in Asheville, North Carolina where she is an Assistant Professor of Art at University of North Carolina at Asheville. [Source: unknown and currently being researched]
