Bessie Harvey
American, (1929–1994)
Bessie Harvey, who was born in Georgia but spent most of her life in Alcoa, TN, drew from her Christian beliefs to create visionary sculpture and drawings. Her work is often graphic and made primarily from found objects, using paint, plastic, and wood to create sculptures, employing her porch as a studio space. Harvey viewed her sculpture as a means to share God’s teachings. Many of her works were derived from visions she saw and believed were directly sent from God. Aspects of her visions would emerge in the wood she sourced, and the visions guided her and represented her strong faith.
