BIOGRAPHY

"Walter Darby Bannard (1934-2016 ) was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Some of his earliest influences were Theodoros Stamos and William Baziotes.
In the mid 1950s to the 1960s Bannard's artworks were primarily hard-edged pastels, incorporating both circular and rectangular forms. In the 1960s he began using more color and exhibiting a more painterly style: brushstrokes overlapped and became more noticeable.
Bannard has received various grants and awards, such as the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, a National Foundation for the Arts grant and the Richard A. Florsheim Art Fund Grant. Bannard was the curator for the Barbara Johnson Whaling Collection from 1958-83.
His work has been in 75 one-man shows and hundreds of group shows around the United States. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim.
In 1989 he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Art and History at the University of Miami, and is currently a Professor and Area Head of Painting."
