BIOGRAPHY

"Whitfield Lovell (1959- ) was born in New York City. He is a painter and installation artist. He received a B.F.A. (1981) from the Cooper Union School of Art. He taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1987 to 2001 and has been a visiting artist at such institutions as Rice University (1995), the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2001), and the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (2002). His work is in numerous collections.
His work evokes the past, while also representing the lives of everyday anonymous African-Americans. He often incorporates everyday objects such as fence posts, frying pans, clocks and musical instruments as backgrounds for his charcoal portrait drawings. His work has been extensively exhibited and is included in numerous public collections."
