Andres Serrano

Andres Serrano (1950- ) was born in New York City. His work became widely known in 1989 as a result of a "cultural and political scandal when his work "Piss Christ" of 1987 caused a heated debate in the United States about the freedom of art and its state financing." "Piss Christ" was a color photograph of a Christ figure submerged in a glass of urine. He has become famous through his photos of corpses and his use of feces and bodily fluids in his work. His works are trailblazing in stirring controversy in conversations around race, religion, and sexuality. His latest works includes portraits of many of the homeless "nomads" of NYC. Many of his works have been used as album covers for various heavy metal groups.
