BIOGRAPHY

Lorna Simpson was born in Brooklyn, NY and received degrees from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the University of California in San Diego in 1982 and 1985 respectively. While Simpson started as a photographer in the 1980s, she has incorporated other media, including film and sculpture, into her work over time. Her work contains themes of memory and history while raising questions about representation and aspects of identity such as race and gender.

Simpson's work is held in the collections of many museums. Simpson’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Miami Art Museum, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Irish Museum of Modern Art, to name a few. She has been the recipient of many awards including an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
