Description

Glass goblet with clear stem and purple cup with a silver band. There is a small band of purple near top of stem.

The artist states, "This set of goblets was made as part of a series that I made in the late 1970s. I wanted them to be simple, attractive and functional. I have always had an interest in melting my own colored glasses. In this case, the purple was created by adding manganese dioxide to the raw base glass, then melting it in a separate small crucible. The steps for making these goblets are as follows: A gather of purple glass I made on the blowpipe and a small bubble is blown in the color. A gather of clear gather is rolled in silver nitrate and trailed onto the glass on the blowpipe, then heated and smoothed in. This becomes the silver pattern on the vessel. The vessel is then heated, blown and stretched. A gob of clear glass is added at the base of the vessel, and stretched out to make the stem. A small gather of purple glass is trailed around the stem, then twisted for the decorative detail. Another gob of clear glass is added to the end of the stem to created the foot. The piece is then broken off the blowpipe onto a punty rod, and the open end of the vessel is heated and opened up."
