Study for Story of the Madonna
© Estate of Elliott Daingerfield
Daingerfield spent his youth in Fayetteville, NC, before moving to New York City at age 21. There he came under the mentorship of the landscape painter George Inness, with whom he shared a belief in the spiritual aspects of art and who taught him techniques for creating a light-infused atmosphere in his paintings. In 1886 Daingerfield moved to Blowing Rock, NC, to recover from diphtheria. He would maintain a summer home and studio there for the rest of his life. After 1894 Daingerfield shifted his focus from landscapes and genre scenes to religious subjects such as this study for the Story of the Madonna, which is a study for a larger work currently held in a private collection.
