Description

Brown jar with large face and small arms and legs on surface

Label History

Blizzard was a self-taught artist who used the ceramic medium to express her thoughts about the human condition. Her pottery strongly referenced pit-fired American Indian pottery rather than traditional European ceramics. I Am Just a Pebble in the Sand is a small jar that reflects on Blizzard’s thoughts about herself, manifesting her years of negative self-perception and questioning what she was doing and where she fit in. In the essay ”Rattler on the Ledge: Georgia Blizzard and Her Pottery Vessels” by Jonathan Williams from the catalogue Cleansing Vessels, Blizzard is quoted as saying: “I can get rid of taunting, unknowing things by bringing them out where I can see them...I feel the need to do it.”
