Label History

Trained as a painter and later as a ceramicist, Sergei Isupov creates surreal objects that explore the complexities of the human experience. Often combining two- and three-dimensional representation, Isupov distorts the human figure for psychological effect. According to the artist, “...the only way you can describe a human being is by describing his imperfections. The perfect human being is uninteresting...It is the imperfections of life that are lovable.”

Mixing the dreamlike qualities of surrealism with references to biblical stories and Renaissance art, Isupov creates contained universes filled with connections and contradictions in clay. The sensual figures in the teapot contort in a fantasy world of floating appendages and strong emotions. The teapot revels in the dichotomy of being a functional if somewhat implausible object; while technically able to hold liquid, its spout is formed from the knee of a threearmed Venus and its body has no proper handle.
