Label History

Lamar set out to be a furniture maker; however, he quickly learned that his interest was not in assembling but rather in subtracting from the wood until a sculpture emerged. His technique requires multiaxial turning of the wood on a lathe to create geometric forms and repositioning the piece to introduce different orientations. His later work, such as Blue Tree Shoes, is larger and required the use of a chainsaw. This is Lamar’s first object in which he used steel feet, and its title refers to the song in his head while he made it, Elvis Presley’s version of “Blue Suede Shoes.” The wood here is no longer raw but burned, colored, and heavily marked.
