Untitled #49
© Estate of Leo Amino / Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, New York
This whimsical drawing of humanoid figures is from a set of about 70 drawings made by Amino in 1949. Amino, who immigrated to the United States with his family from Tokyo in 1929, studied with sculptor Chaim Gross at New York University before serving as a translator in the US Navy during World War II. He attended the 1946 Summer Art Institute at Black Mountain College, where he would go on to teach from 1947 to 1950. The forms seen here reappear in his sculptural works, as does his interest in line and negative space. Amino became known for his innovative use of resin as a sculptural material.
