#6512
© Robert Mangold / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York
Geometric structure is the cornerstone of Mangold’s artistic expression. Combining the classic elements of composition—shape, line, and color—his abstract works, often quite large in scale, juxtapose basic geometric forms such as triangles, circles, and squares with luminous, atmospheric planes of color. His visual narrative is grounded in a dialogue between drawing and painting and deftly creates a unified whole that is both rational and cognitively elusive. Mangold’s dexterity with line is shown in #6512, as the subtle rendering of square within circle melds with the modulated field of tonal gray-blue to create a gestalt devoid of such traditional painting place markers as foreground, middleground, background. The result is a meditative icon that resonates with the sensation of a sacred place.
