Description

Still life of a table with lemons and gourds on top. A ray of light comes in from the left side of the image. There is a white tea pot next to a glass vase that has red flowers in it. In the center of the table is a silver compote with an open lid that has lemons poking out. There is a kitchen timer next to a cake plate/tray that has gourds on top. On the right side of the image are two cup stacked on top of each other that is also on top of five saucers with a lemon slice on the top most saucer. The colors throughout are dark to light oranges and greens.

Label History

Asheville-native Roberts understands the appeal that can arise from unexpected combinations. He uses these constructed juxtapositions to great effect in his realistically painted but imaginary scenes of figures and still lifes. On first examination Roberts’s paintings project a rich attention to detail and mastery of materials, elements that would not be out of place in traditional Renaissance paintings or Dutch still lifes. Upon closer inspection eccentricities and surprises are revealed, such as the kitchen timer that almost anachronistically disrupts what appears to be a traditional still life.
