Untitled
© Estate of Jerry N. Uelsmann
Using hand-rendered photomontage—a darkroom technique closely associated with Surrealism— to create dreamlike scenes, Uelsmann employs his trademark motif of clouds for the first time in this early work. The photographer stages a Victorian dress at a table set for one, the human figure absent despite the worldly possessions left behind. Artifacts of the past, such as a stereopticon, a Victorian parlor device that combines two images to create a three-dimensional effect, and other decorative details further complicate the open-ended narrative constructed by the artist. The limitless sky hovers above, adding an air of mystery to this liminal composition.
