In the Mail:
Lieutenant Thomas Brooks writes from Belgium on September 29: "I am again headed for a tank outfit.... I saw a good portion of France before I came to Belgium. I traveled about by truck to many places and made friends with several Frenchmen... One of the best towns I have seen is Fontainebleau. We got there soon after the first Americans and received the hospitality of the first freedom the people have had in four years.. One French family took me in and overdid themselves with a meal followed by cognac. Then they brought out a collection of recordings of American jazz bands -- Duke Ellington, Fats! Waller, and Louie Armstrong -- Jamieson's old favorites. The next time I came they had the food and cognac and records of Bach and Mozart. Good company. In Belgium it is different: the towns are off limits. There are few civilians where we are. Everything we see is military and we are in the midst of mud. Quite cold also -- it will be bad earlier in the year... We pass the time of night singing 'I Got no Use for the Women!. There aren't any, so it's sour grapes.."
Private Isaac Nakata writes from somewhere in France on October 4: "We are now in France. We are not on the front yet.... France is not too different from Italy although it is much cleaner here. The people are more reserved.... I've given up trying to find anything overseas that compensates for America.. because it is impossible and the searching only stirs up one's desire to go home.."
