Black Mountain College Art Institute Summer 1944 JULY 17- SEPT. 16
TEXTILE WORKSHOP under direction of ANNI ALBERS, of the faculty of Black Mountain College and formerly of the Bauhaus.
The program of the Black Mountain College Art Institute includes a course in Textile Design: in construction of fabrics (in theory and practice), in classes and weaving workshops; in analysis of fabrics; in designing on the loom for industrial production and weaving of individual pieces; in work with primitive looms, for the teaching of weaving in schools with limited equipment, and for those interested in the study of some ancient techniques.
The equipment of the weaving workshop consists of several 8-harness looms (45’ weaving width) as well as smaller looms and a tapestry loom. Simple Indian type looms can be built. Weaving material will be furnished but must be paid for if the woven material should be kept by the student.
The Art Institute gives the student of textiles opportunity to complement his special studies with studies in other fields of art. Courses, lectures and panels: Drawing-Painting, General Design, Color, Sculpture, Wood Plastic, Photography, Clothing, Architecture, Planning, Art Theory, Art Appreciation, Art Education.
Faculty: Joseph Breitenbach, Belle Boas, Jean Charlot, Victor D’Amico, Jose De Creeft, Walter Gropius, Barbara Morgan, J.B. Neumann, Amedee Ozenfant, James Prestini, Bernard Rudofsky, Jose Luis Sert, Howard Thomas, Anni Albers, Josef Albers.
Simultaneously with the Art Institute will be held a Music Institute, the College Summer Session, and a Work Camp. Students may visit classes or lectures of the Music Institute and the College Summer Session, and attend concerts and performances, or participate in the Work Program.
Black Mountain College is situation in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The summers are usually cool, particularly at night. The railroad station of Black Mountain is on the scenic Southern Railroad Line from Salis.
