BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE 1949 1950
Black Mountain College will open its fall semester at 8:30 am September 21.
The fields of study are listed below. In the Academic, Arts, and Workshop divisions courses are determined by the needs of the students. Both introductory and advanced courses are taught. Tutorials are arranged for those who interest or background does not enable them to work profitability within the courses given.
The Cooperative Work division has a dual purpose: to accomplish the various tasks necessary to the physical functioning of the college as well as to teach the techniques of this work to the student.
The college has no required courses; students are encouraged to explore all four divisions of the curriculum in order to discover their latent abilities and to see the correlations between various subjects.
Black Mountain students are offered a great deal of personal and academic freedom to demonstrate their capacity to work effectively on their own, and to handle their lives responsibly. It is the philosophy of the college that such an opportunity is essential to the growth and well-being of the individual, and the spirit of the faculty is that of helping each student achieve a mature handling of the capacities of self.
