Arctic Sentinel in Crystal Habitat
© John Nygren
Nygren earned his MFA in pottery at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, in 1968 and that same year took a life-changing three-week glassblowing course at Penland School of Craft, where Mark Peiser was the newly appointed and first Resident Craftsman in Glass. A year later he moved to Walnut Cove, NC, and shifted his art practice to glass, building New Branch Glass Studio. His artwork has always reflected his love of nature, landscapes, and animals. One of his frogs can be seen in the work Arctic Sentinel in Crystal Habitat. Nygren says making them comes organically from working with the glass and allowing it to take the shape it wants. He calls this frog a sentinel, stationed to keep watch.
