Haiku
© The John Cage Trust
Cage was an influential artist and composer who taught at Black Mountain College for the 1948 and 1952 summer sessions. Haiku is the first and sole piece published by the Black Mountain College Music Press, a rare artifact with few copies printed. It reflects the artist’s interdisciplinary background, referencing poetry, music, and visual art as well as Asian aesthetics. His compositions were inspired by the ancient Chinese text I Ching: The Book of Changes, which he used to help remove the decision-making process, introducing chance into the creation of his works.
