Label History

Evans was employed at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, NC, where she worked as the gatekeeper, and the influence of the natural world is visible in her drawings and paintings. Having experienced hallucinations throughout her life, Evans is quoted as stating that she had no imagination and that these works poured out of her through a higher spiritual power. Evans’s job provided a ready stream of buyers for her work. Artist Nina Howell Starr was one of them and was instrumental in bringing Evans’s work to a wider audience. Evans is considered a visionary artist, a subgroup of Outsider art focused on spiritual expressions
