Label History

Preger-Simon was a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. In summer 1953 she was among a group of dancers whom Cunningham brought to Black Mountain College for intensive weeks of choreography and practice. In retrospect, Cunningham designated that summer as the founding of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, as it was the first time he was able to work with a group of dancers for a concentrated time and create a coherent body of work. The responsive, collaborative, interactive community was an open environment in which experimental, untested ideas were encouraged and nourished. That summer Preger-Simon made a series of ink drawings that ably capture both the spirit and likeness of some of the college’s students and faculty. Preger-Simon is a psychotherapist living in Massacusetts. She is the author of Dancing with Merce Cunningham (2019).
