Label History

One of North Carolina’s most prominent painters, Gatewood grew up in Yanceyville, NC, where her home now serves as the Richmond-Miles History Museum. Nearby, the Dan River flows and forms a naturally rich soil bed known as the Lowgrounds. Often taking a playful approach to her subjects, From the Lowgrounds depicts cows camouflaged among the trees. Using bold pink, Gatewood composes a striated field and subtly contrasts the black-and-white animals and greyscale trees in the work’s foreground. Through a limited color palette, use of multiple patterns, and by approaching her subject from a low angle, Gatewood effectively flattens out the perspective and generates a sense of the surreal in what would otherwise be an everyday scene.
