The Little Red Bush
© Estate of Harriet Randall Lumis
Working at the turn of the 20th century, Lumis was fully committed to the study of nature, recording the glories of the outdoors on her canvas. She was instructed in both Tonalist and Impressionist styles by painters Willis S. Adams in Massachusetts, Leonard Ochtman in Connecticut, and Hugh Breckenridge in Gloucester, MA. The Little Red Bush is aptly titled, with the punch of red color in the right middle ground providing the main focal point between the blue mountains in the background and the beautifully contrasting green trees and placid waters in the foreground. —
