Magnolia Buds and Possum
© Estate of Robert Johnson
Johnson’s artistic practice centered on his personal experience of the natural environment. He was not interested in providing a documentary view, instead seeking to convey the overall sensory experience of a specific encounter in nature. This often results in a magical or surreal quality in his imagery. In this work a possum and magnolia bud anchor the foreground, their relative sizes seemingly out of keeping with reality but perhaps true to the artist’s memory of the scene. A long-time resident of the mountains of Western North Carolina, Johnson documented the Blue Ridge Mountains and traveled the world exploring and illuminating the natural environments he encountered.
