Seated Nude on Red Blanket
In the 1890s Henri served as mentor to a group of newspaper illustrators who would go on to become painters of the Ashcan School—William Glackens, George Luks, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan. Henri had a long and influential career as an art instructor at schools in Philadelphia and New York City and the author of the book The Art Spirit (1923), still in print. He advocated that artists should honor spontaneity and develop their own personal means of expression without following prevailing aesthetic conventions. One can imagine Seated Nude on Red Blanket being created in a classroom full of students painting the nude model, capturing the essence of life in the human form.
