Untitled
Davies received instruction in art schools in Chicago and New York City before traveling to Europe in 1893, where he studied the Symbolist paintings of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and the Realist works of the Hague School. He exhibited with The Eight in New York City alongside Robert Henri and John Sloan, and then served as a principal organizer of the highly influential 1913 Armory Show exhibition that introduced modernist art to the American public. Davies’s art reflected his myriad of influences, and he worked in a variety of styles concurrently and over broad swathes of time. In this untitled watercolor, which is small in scale but large in impact, turbulent skies rumble over a vaguely indicated skyline. Rendered in an intensely contrasting color scheme of blues and oranges, it suggests Cubist and Synchromist influences.
