Squid Under Pier
© Estate of Minna Citron / Licensed by VAGA at Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York
Citron created this print while attending classes at the Atelier 17 printmaking studio in New York City. A far departure from the Realist style she utilized during the 1930s, Squid Under Pier has the look of many Atelier 17 creations, with swirling incised lines combined with textural tones in an abstract pattern that suggests biological forms. One of her best-known prints, Citron described it thus: “The component in Squid Under Pier, which, some time after completion of the print, came to be called ‘squid,’ is a threatening entanglement of tortuous, menacing lines…with exciting variety in third dimensionality…. Contrasting with this disturbing agitation are the quiet interpenetrating, transparent planes of the neutral-colored ‘pier’ and the fluid open areas of light-blue ‘sea’ and ‘sky.’”
