Description

Bust of a woman with hair down on sides and up in back.

Confirmed by the Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation, this sculpture is of Gross's daughter Mimi who was around 13 years old when the work was created. Additionally, lignum vitae, the wood this work is made from, was one of Gross's favorite woods to carve. He preferred hard, tropical woods to soft woods.

Label History

One of the United States’ most important figurative sculptors, Gross emigrated from Austria in 1921, living and working in New York City’s Greenwich Village for the next 70 years. Mimi is most likely a portrait of his 13-year-old daughter, Miriam.
