Metamorphosis #7
© Lloyd Carl Owle
Owle is a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. After studying with the famous Eastern Band carver Amanda Crowe, he began creating unique carvings depicting the history and legends of the Cherokee people. Moving around this three-dimensional work, it becomes apparent that the entire form is filled with creatures—human, mammal, and bird. The transitions are not obvious; for instance, the wing that extends the full height of the sculpture appears to be part of an eagle dancer’s costume rather than a bird. Metamorphosis #7 has a sense of monumentality that belies its actual dimensions.
