Post FluxMix XII
© Kevin Hogan
Connecting his internet-based work with his contemporary painting practice, Hogan employs the optical effects of Ben-Day dots, a four-color process used in printing, in Post FluxMix XII. On approaching the work, the illusion of mechanical reproduction disappears as the individuality of strokes and applied paint combine to form a complex system composed of organic gesture. The matrix, a mathematical system created to efficiently enhance our understanding of relationships between numbers and objects, becomes increasingly subjective in Hogan’s work. Also a printmaker, Hogan takes on the meaning of matrices to question the impermanence of materiality and find the fleeting moments of stillness in the constant movement of our digital world.
