Hank Williams
© Howard Finster / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York
One of the better-known self-taught artists, Finster’s work is filled with religious overtones and repetitive themes such as handwritten phrases and careful numbering and dating. This portrait of country music legend Hank Williams is numbered “15.000.220” and dated “June-26-1990.10:40:PM.” Finster considered himself a minister and felt he had a very personal and close relationship with God, which he frequently expressed through his art. The artist was also fascinated by celebrity and created many works, such as this one, that treated heroes of pop culture in a similar fashion to his treatment of religious icons.
