Hillside Shack
© Estate of Beverly Buchanan
In the middle stage of her career, Buchanan began a prolific series of miniature shack structures that referenced the architecture of slave cabins. As a child, Buchanan travelled the rural South with her stepfather, an academic and agricultural specialist who worked with rural Black farmers. Many of the Black sharecropping families they visited lived in and maintained structures originally built by former enslaved people. Inspired by these encounters, her sculptures mimic the homes of specific individuals. Some are painted in muted colors while others have vivid facades. All evince a structural and visual playfulness, showing creative resilience in the face of the oppression embedded in African American cultural histories
