Description

"Landscape, water in middle ground, mountain in background, large sun in upper right, crowded beach with nude figures in foreground, planes falling from sky.
Revelation 16:8-9 (KJV) And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory."

Label History

Apocalyptic chaos rains down upon a beach of libertine vacationers in Long’s depiction of Revelation 16: 8-9, which reads: “And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.” Despite extensive formal art training in New York City and Europe, Long’s mature style shifted to a surreal vernacular that suited his vocation as an evangelical minister. This work is from a larger series depicting scenes from the book of Revelation painted in the artist’s later years
