Label History

Luster began her 1998 series One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana with collaborator and poet C.D. Wright in order to record Louisiana's imprisoned population via photography and the collection of personal information. One Big Self gave those imprisoned an opportunity to present themselves to the world through the lens of Luster, who encouraged in her sitters vulnerability and storytelling by including possessions, writing, or body art and language. LCIW 70, Jenar Jury and LSP 129, George Meche require us to face the realities of the prison-industrial complex and our own internalized societal biases regarding the human rights of imprisoned people while also encouraging us to see the humanity within everyone.
