Poppies
© Friends of James Daugherty Foundation
Born in Asheville, Daugherty spent his early childhood in Indiana, Ohio, and Washington, DC. He was a painter, illustrator, and muralist who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran School of Arts and Design, and in Europe. Involved with the American Modernism movement from its early days at the turn of the 20th century, Daugherty moved seamlessly between realism and abstraction over the course of his career. The brightly colored Poppies is a striking still life painting, combining recognizable flowers with more abstracted forms.
