Label History

Tolliver, known by his signature “Mose T,” was a prolific artist living in Montgomery, AL. He worked for the McClendon Furniture Company until he was injured when a thousand-pound load of marble fell and crushed his legs. Following the accident, the company’s owner brought Tolliver house paint and plywood, encouraging him to paint. Humor flows through Tolliver’s work, which reflected his community as well as the desires of his hundreds of collectors. To meet demand, his wife and children started painting in a similar vein and using his name, creating confusion about the authenticity of some of his work. This painting specifically references his encounter with the artist Fred Nall Hollis, who was a frequent subject for a period after their meeting.
