November Twilight
In this dramatically colored view of a wooded landscape in late autumn, the sun is low on the horizon, casting fire-toned colors across the scene. Silhouetted tree trunks and branches are clearly distinct from the twilight sky rendered in yellow and orange brushstrokes. Enneking was especially known for this type of subject. His emotional response to nature extended beyond art, with his strongly held conservationist beliefs leading to his election as Boston’s commissioner of Hyde Park. He achieved prominence as a painter in Boston and throughout New England, resulting in a lucrative career. Enneking’s social connections extended internationally due to his studies in Paris, where his milieu included the artists Corot, Manet, Millet, Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir.
