Description

still-life, detailed sketch of a single asparagus stalk

Label History

Buck, a longtime resident of Western North Carolina, works from personal proclivity, addressing commonplace or quirky subjects that appeal to her. She operated a printmaking studio with her husband, Lewis, in one of the first group studio spaces in Asheville’s River Arts District. Better known for her work in printmaking and collage, Buck decided to use the less common medium of silverpoint for this drawing of an asparagus spear. “I have chosen silverpoint because of the uncompromising quality of the line it produces, closely related to that of etching, both requiring a grouping of lines to produce tones,” she states. The result is an elegant and striking still life.
