An African American man and woman sitting at a table playing cards. A poster of Malcom X is on the wall in background.

Label History

Photographer Weems places herself within constructed scenes that explore the relationship between race, gender, and domesticity in her Kitchen Table series. In these works the familiar setting of the kitchen table serves as a meeting place for friends, family, and lovers, as well as a place of solace. Her bodily presence in the work functions as a visual reclamation of Black female personhood and a genesis of loving self-representation. In Untitled (Playing Cards/Malcolm X) from the Kitchen Table II series, Weems’s character rests her cards and head, her cigarette mirroring and contrasting Malcolm X’s determined gesture captured in the poster above her. Playing a competitive hand of cards, Weems strategically employs the game to examine broader power dynamics in the home.
