Label History

In this photograph, which was published on the cover of his iconic 1971 book Tulsa, Clark captures his friend Billy Mann posing with movie-star swagger as he brandishes a handgun atop an unmade bed. The image alludes to the full content of Clark’s book, which depicts his hometown friends doing drugs, engaging in sexual activities, and carousing in photographs made between 1963 and 1971. A participant in and documentarian of these activities, Clark’s photographs suggest the factors and situations that surround these moments of young adulthood, including tragedy and joy, life and death, and compassion and exploitation.
