Eagle made with 1 billion dollar bills holding a pigeon "Joe" in left talon. A second pigeon "Nick" is in front.
DEREGULATOR addresses Spruce Pine, NC-based Lemanski’s view of the 2008 US financial crisis combined with her focus on the natural world. An eagle made with imitation billion-dollar bills symbolizes the nation as its left talons smash “Joe Pigeon.” The pigeons in the sculpture, in their blue uniforms with name patches, represent the powerless blue-collar workers. Lemanski’s dynamic menagerie of animal sculptures probes the links between natural and manufactured worlds. With a taxidermist’s sensibility—using copper armatures covered with a variety of materials bound together with artificial sinew— she presents her subjects in lifelike poses that are expressive and, at times, threatening.
